Netflix: Follow-Up

Below is the email I just received from Netflix regarding their switch to Blu-Ray exclusivity.

You're receiving this email because you have asked to receive high-definition movies in the HD DVD format. As you may have heard, most of the major movie studios have recently decided to release their high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. In order to provide the best selection of high-definition titles for our members, we have decided to go exclusively with Blu-ray as well.

While we will continue to make our current selection of HD DVD titles available to you for the next several months, we will not be adding additional HD DVD titles or reordering replacements.

Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs. Don't worry, we will contact you before this happens.


So there you have it. They're going to continue offering their current selection but will not add to it or replace any discs that get lost/stolen/scratched. So we get to continue watching HD-DVDs via Netflix for the rest of the year. Hopefully by then the Blu-Ray players (i.e. Sony PS3) will come down in price and there will be some games worth playing on it.

Dude, you guys must be completely hacked since you just got that HD DVD player... I don't lean either way since regular DVDs are still fine with me (my new HD set is games-only) but man, that sucks. = (

Not totally anything.

We didn't have an upconverting DVD player yet and that feature alone is a nice addition. Sure, it'd be nice if the HD-DVDs took off a bit better, but the upconversion is a nice feature and we did get 7 free movies with the player and the player was only $200.

It's not like the unit won't work as a great DVD player when Netflix stops renting HD-DVDs.
